US forces are attacking Iran after an Iranian attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, and Iran’s declaration that the Strait is closed “until further notice.”

CNN reported at 7:00 Eastern that Iran had said it was closing the Strait after firing shots at a vessel.

“Following this incident … the Strait of Hormuz will be closed until further notice and until the end of the American interventions in this area, and no vessels will be allowed to pass through it,” the Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps said, according to Axios.

The report notes that an Iranian missile damaged the cargo vessel.

Axios’s Barak Ravid went on to report that a US official said the US military is striking Iranian targets in response.

“Among the attacked targets – air surveillance radars, facilities for storing missiles and UAVs, missile and UAV launch sites, maritime surveillance radars, ground-to-air missile launchers,” Ravid said, citing a senior US official.

US central Command confirmed in a statement that US strikes, the third this week, began just after 7 pm ET after Iran’s attack on a Cyprus-flagged container ship. “A civilian crew member is missing and the vessel is unable to continue the journey due to an onboard fire and significant engineroom damage,” CENTCOM said.

“Iran was provided yet another opportunity to demonstrate adherence to the Memorandum of Understanding after being held accountable for earlier attacks on commercial vessels but has again failed,” the statement continued.

“In response, the United States is imposing a heavy cost by continuing to degrade Iran’s ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial ships freely transiting the strait. The strikes are being carried out at the direction of the Commander in Chief.”

This comes after President Trump, on Friday, threatened that the US has “1,000 Missiles Locked and Loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, with thousands of more to immediately follow.”

Trump previously declared that the ceasefire is “over” following US strikes on Iran in response to Iran targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump said in a statement on Friday that the US has agreed to continue talks but that the ceasefire is still off.
