RINO Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) told reporters on Wednesday, as the House was working to pass the SAVE America Act a third time, that the bill is probably not going to pass in the Senate.
During Senate Republican leadership’s weekly press briefing on Wednesday, Thune laughably claimed he’d be “willing to do just about anything because I think we are all here in favor of the Save America Act.” He then dismissed the idea of terminating the filibuster to ensure its passage.
“It’s also very unlikely that the Senate Republicans are going to vote to get rid of the legislative filibuster,” Thune said, suggesting he’s not even going to try. Instead, he blamed the Democrats for his leadership failures, telling reporters, “The issue here is the Democrats, and we ought to be going after them.”
President Trump has previously called Thune out for being a weak leader and “playing it too soft.” “Well, he’s only a couple of votes short, but that’s what being a leader is,” Trump said of Thune’s claim that he doesn’t have the votes to nuke the filibuster in March. “That’s part of being a leader. You have to get the votes.”
Meanwhile, House Republicans passed the SAVE America Act once again on Wednesday as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), The Gateway Pundit reported.
During the press conference, Thune also expressed insecurity over the Byrd rule, which liberal Obama-era Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough previously weaponized to strip the SAVE Act from the Senate’s budget reconciliation bill in June.
Trump has also previously questioned Thune’s leadership abilities, calling him out over his repeated refusal to exercise his right as leader and fire MacDonough. “I cannot understand it. A leader has the right to fire the person at will and put somebody else there,” Trump said late last month. “We get so many negative rulings from her, the parliamentarian. She’s been there for years, and she was put there by Harry Reid and Barack Hussein Obama.”
But somehow, it’s the Democrats’ fault that the SAVE America Act and other conservative legislation keep failing in the Republican controlled Senate.

Reporter: Senators Mike Lee and Rick Scott are both calling on the Senate to stay in session and bypass any recesses or weekends to get the SAVE America after cross the finish line. Is that something that you’re open to supporting?
Thune: Well, if I thought there was a path to getting a positive result or a positive outcome, I’d be willing to do just about anything because I think we are all here in favor of the Save America Act. The folks that have consistently block voted against it are all the Democrats in the United States Senate, and I think that’s unlikely to change. And it’s also very unlikely that the Senate Republicans are going to vote to get rid of the legislative filibuster.
So, we’ve had five votes on it. We have voted on the entire Save America Act. We have voted on photo ID as a separate issue. We have voted on photo ID and registration, or citizenship to register. We’ve had that amendment. We’ve had a vote on boys competing in girls’ sports. We’ve had five now votes on the Save America Act or individual components of it, and none of which got a single Democrat. To me, the issue here is the Democrats, and we ought to be going after them for opposing something that’s popular across this country, not just with Republicans but with Democrats as well.
President Trump previously went off on Senate Republicans after the Democrats revealed their plans to nuke the filibuster when they reclaim the Senate with radical left candidates, expand the Supreme Court, and impose term limits on justices.
Trump has been demanding that Republicans nuke the filibuster since October 2025, but Thune refused to listen. Now, the Democrats are going to overhaul our system of government.
Trump said he will no longer call the Democrats “Dumocrats,” and “The title of DUMB will revert to the Republicans who allowed this horrible calamity to happen to our Party, and our Nation, itself.”
