Accused rapist and Democratic Senate nominee for Maine, Graham Platner, suspended his campaign Wednesday night. While still denying sexual assault allegations, the progressive is at war with the “Democratic establishment,” which is teeing up to replace him on its terms.
“We are suspending campaign operations,” Platner said in an 11-minute video Wednesday night. The candidate has been accused of rape and sexual assault on multiple occasions by multiple ex-girlfriends.
Voters already knew about some of the allegations, along with his Nazi chest tattoo he intended to keep a secret, when electing him as their nominee in the primary last month.
He made it clear that he is not suspending his campaign because the allegations are true—he maintains they are false—but because of the “stretches by those in power.”
Platner did not drop out. While he said, “I intend to file my paperwork to withdraw,” he insisted on first knowing the system set up by the Democratic establishment to replace him. He wants it to be on his terms.
However, Platner must withdraw by Monday, July 13, for Democrats to be able to select a replacement by July 27.
Before the “concession” video was filmed, the party Platner called “one of the most entrenched political systems in the world” released its plan to replace him. After holding a vote with more than 100 state committee members, the Maine Democratic Party plans to “hold a nominating convention to choose a new nominee if there is a vacancy to fill.”
Candidates are already throwing their hats in the race, cozying up to Platner and his progressive views.
